Embracing Time Alone for Sensory Overwhelm.

Being sensory sensitive has many benefits but it isn’t without its drawbacks. Amongst all the positive days that I experience I also have days when life is tough! During these tough days I am left exhausted after minimal activity, my limbs ache, I get headaches, I have stomach pain and I long for isolation and darkness. To many people who do not understand such sensitivities my behaviour may look like depression but I assure you I am not depressed!

It is because of this need for darkness and my struggle to process the feelings associated with it that firstly attracted me to the philosophy of Hygge. Hygge is the opposite to darkness. Hygge promotes love, it promotes happiness and it promotes laughter. Hygge is about embracing the positive emotions that not only make you feel good but the kind of feelings that penetrate every fibre of your body. The tingle in your arms and legs when music plays. The belly laughter that you only ever experience with true friends and the relief and comfort that is felt when taking off your shoes (and your bra) at the end of a long day.

These are the moments in life that make me feel alive. Remembering these Hygge moments help me when I am in that dark place because instead of fighting and berating myself for these experiences I now love myself enough to allow myself to not be okay and allow myself time in the dark. I allow myself time to rest and I recognise that dark space for what it is - My place to recover from the overwhelming impact of my world.

I used to think that my sensory sensitivities could be thought away with positive techniques alone. But I now understand that my experiences radiate much further than my mind. I now know that to stay balanced I must treat my sensitivities holistically through thought, body and action. This is something I have to remember every day. It doesn’t come naturally to me. But I hope the more I share the more truly comfortable I will feel in my beautiful sensory sensitive skin.
